currently based in London, independent art and cultural worker

Joshua Leaung is a London-based art and cultural worker whose practice spans painting and experimental social performance. Through a multidisciplinary approach that extends into curatorial practice, Joshua explores the selection, arrangement, and aestheticisation of material artefacts as metonymic stand-ins for autobiographical experience. His research also engages with queer social dilemmas within contemporary liminal contexts, articulating the shifting epistemological frameworks and ontological structures that shape living beings and their relationship to the metaphysical, he further questions the grounds upon which subjectivity is constructed and understood.

Having grown up between cultures, his work examines the complexities of hybrid identity shaped by both Asian and European philosophies. His pieces are not merely narratives grounded in lived experience, but also reflections imbued with a spiritual introspection, a dialogue between ego, naturalism, and abstraction.

Joshua’s earlier painting series SUNYATA, exhibited in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai, reveals a powerful sense of self-expression and a meditative exploration of humanity’s relationship with its surroundings through a Taoist lens. The layered brushstrokes and rhythmic interplay of colour and texture construct a visual philosophy of form and emotion, evoking the influence of Neo-Expressionism and the nocturnal allure of urban landscapes.
